technical pens
Two generations of technical pens.
At the top is a Rotring Isograph, which I bought during my apprenticeship, probably around 1979, when I started doing drawing at technical college, and later layout drawings for pump sets. Looking at the Rotring website, I think that they still sell these, unchanged, today. From memory (which is a bit uncertain after thirty-one years) I think I bought this in a shop on Fairfax Street, Bristol.
Below that is a ruling pen: you set the line width with the small screw, which moved the points of the pen closer or further apart, dip the tip in India ink, and draw. I always found these rather easier to use than the Rotring; and later, when I started doing poster design work, almost always used a ruling pen.
Have you ever thought how some jobs simply disappear with the passage of time? I don’t just mean the obvious ones, like jester, hangman, groom of the stool (look it up: it’s not pleasant). But, in these days of almost universal use of CAD in design offices, how many people are employed as tracers? With laser cut vinyl lettering, how many sign-writers remain to paint with brush and mahl stick? Few, and daily fewer, I suspect. Does finding this rather sad make me an old buffer? Again, I suspect so.
Red Blue Screw
If you like playing pool you might really enjoy lighting reflective metallic objects. Just like a billiard ball bouncing off a bumper, the angle of the light bouncing off a shiny object matches the angle of incidence. Because the direction of reflections is so predictable, and because polished metallic surfaces give off almost no diffuse reflections, you can exercise a tremendous amount of control over how these surfaces appear.
The trick of these types of shots is to shine two or more colored lights from different angles so that each light reflects off different surfaces of the subject. This was a two light setup. One flash with red gel was fired bare from camera left. A second flash with blue gel was fired through a softbox positioned above the subject to camera right. The screw was sitting on a sheet of plexiglass suspended a few inches above a black background.
The photo was taken with my trusty Tamron 90/2.8 macro lens and my brand new Nikon D7000 body. The screw is about 3/4 of an inch long.
This image was created for the Strobist Sundays assignment "shiny metal". I think it's also appropriate for the Macro Mondays theme "pop art".
