Monster Bath-House (Dec. 28, 1902)
This is the original Bimini Baths. It burned to the ground on November 8, 1905. This is an article from the LA Times about the grand opening of the original Bimini Baths (part of the article is illegible so I'll add ** if I can't figure it out):
(December 28, 1902)
THE "BIMINI BATHS," NEW LOCAL WONDER.
IN THREE more days Los Angeles will have, openend and ready for a world of unwashed, the largest bath-house, with the exception of Sutro's, on the Pacific Coast. This big enterprise is located at Third street and Vermont avenue, and is the property of Dr. David W. Edwards of No. 902 South Beacon street. Dr. Edwards organized the Conservative Life Insurance Company, whose beautiful building at Third and Hill streets testifies to its abiding prosperity.
This undertaking has not attracted general public attention, probably because of its rather remote location; for, nestled in the eucalyptus groves surmounting the hills beyond the Westlake oil fields, it is out of the sight of most men. By the Westlake Traction line the place is easy of access, however, as it is but a few minutes' walk from the First-street terminus.
Dr. Edwards is going to call his colossal natatorium the "Bimini Baths," after Butterworth's poem on Ponce de Leon's vain quest for the fountain of youth. The grounds were once part of an oil field, and the mineral springs, which supply a constant, crystal-pure stream at a temperature of 113 deg., were put down for oil wells. The water contains a potassium and soda solution, and is a natural uric-acid solvent, besides being almost antiseptic.
The building itself is located on *** Edwards's(sic) fourteen-acre tract on Vermont, between First and Third streets. The completed structure will cost $50,000 and has exterior dimensions of 200 by 120 feet. The huge ***in swimming pool is larger than most people have ever seen, being fifty yards in length and varying in depth from two and one-half to ten feet. ***ded to the main building is a wing with a smaller pool for ladies and ****rren exclusively. Besides these there are a large number of individual pools with private apartments, for the use of invalids or such persons as do not desire to enter a general plunge. Many of the rooms are equipped with porcelain baths.
Although the water-covered area of the "Bimini" is phenomenal, it is yet perhaps the smaller part of its space, **** the promenaders will have the benefit of 16,000 square feet of floor area. Bathing excites a keen appetite, and for the hungry there will be a cafe annexed. No liquors will be sold on the premises. Around the main plunge will run a balcony capable of seating 1000 persons. From the entrance an arched bridges, studded with electric lamps, spans the center of the pool. Provision has been made for entertainments of various kinds, and these will be given occasionally. The main "swimmin' hole" was built to adapt it for amateur races and water polo.
The decorative scheme for the interior is white and green, and to complete the idea, tropical plants and foliage will be used. An arching roof of glass provides ample light for the day, and by night Dr. Edwards's (sic) electric plant will drive darkness from the uttermost corners. The heating and lighting, as well as the pumping, is all done in the building, where a twenty-five-horse power gasoline engine, with a switchboard, dynamo and double-acting pump have been installed.
The grounds of the "Bimini" are well fitted for the improvement which it is proposed to make. Covering as they do fourteen acres on the top of a slight hill, a beautiful park is a possibility and a prospect. A broad, smooth roadway is in course of construction at present, which will be extended to the Hollywood boulevard.
The water supply occupies a little wing all by itself. Coming from a depth of 1750 feet, it has a natural flow of fifteen miner's inches, and is collected in several large cement basins, the overflow of which is carried, warm and invigorating, direct to the plunge. A tower fifty feet high has been constructed over the engine-room for water storage and cooling.
Yesterday afternoon the machinery was tried out, and everything went off "decently and in order," as is frequently not the case with first trials. The lights burn at a voltage of 225, which more than doubles the lead sent by the local companies through their lamps, and which gives a much more brilliant light. The plunge is now being filled, and the opening of the house will be one of the formal functions of New Year's eve., Wednesday, December 31.
